How to Set Up Your New Android Phone
Android mobile phones are very popular, but if you have just bought or been given an Android phone for the first time it can be difficult to know where to start. Here is a simple guide to help you get started using your Android phone.
1. Unpack and charge the phone
The first step is of course to remove all packaging from the phone, insert the SIM card and battery, and leave it to charge. Leave the phone until it is fully charged, which will probably take a few hours.
2. Turn on the phone and connect to your Google account
The Android operating system is provided by Google. If you already have a Google or GMail account, you will be prompted to enter your username and password when you turn on the phone for the first time. You can then choose to automatically sync your phone with the contacts and calendar of your Google account, which saves a lot of time in getting information onto your phone.
If you don’t have a Google account, now is the time to set one up! Choose a suitable username and a password that you will remember. You will need this account for downloading apps.
3. Connect to your home wireless network
If you have a limited data package or are using a pay-as-you-go phone, you will find it cheaper to use your home internet connection as much as possible for downloading apps and data. Enter the settings menu of your Android phone to turn on the Wi-Fi. You will be shown a list of available networks, so choose the one that belongs to you and enter the password to connect. (If you don’t know the name of your router, then the network with the strongest signal is usually the right one.)
4. Install the apps you want
Your Android phone will likely come with some pre-installed apps, so take some time to explore these. Then press the Play Store icon to browse or search for additional apps that you can install. Once you find the app you want, press download to install. You will soon receive a notification to tell you that the app has been successfully installed. Tap the notification or select the applications icon to launch your new app.
5. Customize your home screen
The home screen is the screen that you are presented with when you turn on the phone. You can customize it by choosing which icons and widgets to display. To remove icons already on the home screen, tap and hold the icon, then drag it down to the trashcan to remove it. Then tap on the applications screen to select and drag the icons you want onto the home screen.
6. Secure your phone
If you want your phone to be secured against snoopers, you will need to set up screen lock. Choose the security option from the settings menu. You can then choose a PIN that must be entered before your phone’s screen can be unlocked. Your phone should automatically enter locked mode when you leave it for a few moments without touching it.
